At All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Bhopal, stenting was done for the biggest blood vessel in the body on Thursday, by the Cardiology Department.

A 34 year old man, a resident of Rewa, had severe blockage in his blood vessel since birth. This disease which is Coarctation of Aorta was treated successfully in AIIMS Bhopal by angioplasty.

According to AIIMS Bhopal Cardiologist Dr Gaurav Khandewal, the patient had high Blood pressure since long time, along with headache and pain in legs while walking. The echocardiography and CT scan investigations revealed that the aorta had 99% blockage, just after giving upper limb and head branches.

The patient consulted too many corporate hospitals in metro cities, which quoted lakhs for the major surgery. The patient showed to AIIMS Bhopal, where the treatment was done by percutaneous method, without giving incisions and patient being in conscious state. The cost of the treatment to patient was one-fourth as compared to private hospitals. This is possibly the first case in Bhopal and one of the few in Madhya Pradesh, in which this rare disease was treated by stenting method.

Prof Sarman Singh, Director, AIIMS, Bhopal said that our doctors are being regularly trained by adopting new technology in AIIMS Bhopal to provide economical & quality treatment/ care. This is one of its example.

As per Dr Gaurav Khandelwal, Aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body which supplies blood to the whole body through various branches. Normally the aorta measures about 20 mm, but in this case it was only 1 mm at the blockage site. It was brought to the normal size by carefully deploying the stent. After stenting, the blood pressure of the patient became normal, and blood flow to his legs returned.
