After more than three decades, a biographical drama ‘Skandagupta’ based on King Skandagupta will be performed in city. The students of Madhya Pradesh School of Drama (MPSD) will present the play at Antarang Hall, Bharat Bhavan.
Written by a renowned playwright and author Jai Shankar Prasad, the play is directed by Alok Chatterjee, the noted theatre director of the city. Notably, the play will be staged twice i.e. here on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The play was first staged at Bharat Bhavan in the year 1983 by artistes of Rangmandal under the direction of BV Karanth and after that this will be the second show of the play.
After the play was staged under the direction of BV Karanth it was appreciated by the art lovers and also it made it pretty clear that the dramas written by Jai Shankar Prasad are not only limited to books but can be staged beautifully before the art lovers, said Sanjay Upadhayay Director of MPSD.
While elaborating further, Sanjay Upadhayay said that the interesting fact is that for past 31 years no drama institute or play group has ever staged this play till now after it was presented in 1983. So, October 7 and 8 will be historical dates in the world of Indian theatre industry, he added contentedly.
Sanjay then praised the work done by Jai Shankar Prasad saying, “Prasad had been one of the best playwrights of the country and a reflection of Indian culture, rich history can be observed in his drama writing which makes his dramas even more informative and interesting.”
The play will have the running time of 1 and a half hour. Notably, students from 10 States including Uttarakhand, Delhi, Chandigarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh will stage the show. Sanjay said, “Many of the students will speak in Hindi for the first. It is also an initiative to impart the love for the national language among the young students.” The play was prepared in 35 days, he added.
