Advisory to reduce power bills

Published on:

The state's energy department has issued an advisory related measures to reduce electricity bill of the power consumers of the State. According to the Advisory, power consumers should make maximum use of sunlight during the day and switch off the non-essential fans, lights etc.

Care must be taken to switch off lighting, fans and computer monitors particularly in the lunch time during office hours, when going out of the house or out of the room, even if it is for just a short while.

According to the advisory, energy consumption can be reduced by purchasing energy at least three-star efficient appliances certified by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. By not keeping electronic equipments such as TV on standby mode, nearly 70 units of electricity can be saved in a year.

Computer – Keeping computer monitor and copiers in sleep mode saves about 40 percent energy. LED monitor should be used. This traditional CRT uses less energy compared to the monitor. If a computer is kept on 24x7, it uses more electricity than a refrigerator. Hence, switch off the computer when not in use. LED bulbs and LED tubelights are being distributed under the Ujala programme. Power saver fans are also being made available.

Rooftop Solar Panels- In the pilot project of Solar Energy Mission, rooftop solar panels of 10 KV to 500 KV are being installed by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy of the Government of India. For this work, Solar Energy Corporation of India is working as a Nodal Agency.

Ceiling fan- At present, BEE 5 star-rated high-efficiency fans in place of regular fans are able to save energy; only about half the electricity is used in this. Do not keep the fridge close to the wall or near straight under sunlight or other heat-generating equipments. The motor of the refrigerator has to work more due to the dust that forms over the condensor coils as a result of which more electricity is consumed, so the coils must be cleaned regularly.

Air Conditioners (AC) - Maximum comfortable air conditioning is available at a minimum cost on a setting of 25 degree centigrade. If the setting of the thermostat is reduced by 2 degrees in winter and 2 degrees above in summer, emissions of about 900 kg of carbon dioxide can be reduced.
