On the occasion of International Woman's day, UNDP has given a theme “Women in Leadership achieving an equal future in a Covid-19 world”. Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital is working on the same theme for long. Out of 288 employees 153 are women while the number of male employees are 135 in the proportion of 60:40.

Including Medical Director Dr Prerna Upadhyaya, all 13 ophthalmologists are women. During last 34 years they have performed over 2.74 Lakh eye surgeries to eradicate blindness from the society. Not only ophthalmologist but three quarters of total strength of employees like optometrist, Paramedical, Patient care takers and nurses etc. are also female. Post of Quality control manager and Hospital administrator are also holded by women. It is presumed in the society that comparatively women are more compassionate than male. They take care of the patients with utmost sensitivity. Therefore this hospital have become synonym of help and service. Hospital has earned the name and fame in central India region and become a pioneer eye care organization. To earn these achievements the contribution of women employees is remarkable.

During Covid-19 pandemic in the month of June 2020 lockdown was relaxed and the hospital resumed its regular activities. Following all protocols and SOP’s in the leadership of Dr. Prerna Upadhyaya, performing surgeries of eye patients were started. Senitisation of main power, operation theaters and hospital premises was a big challenge. Which was strictly followed for the employees as well as the patients.

Entry of attendants of the patients were restricted distribution of masks and sanitization in regular intervals of the premises were also ensured. Patients and staff of the hospital were permitted their entry in the hospital after their non contact Thermo checkup. Almost all surgeons and employees of the hospital have so far been fully vaccinated.

When there was complete lockdown even in the month of April and May 2020 the emergency services of the hospital were continued. Employees like patients care takers were given sewing machines and masks over one Lakh were prepared by them. Some of the female employees were engaged them in the pantry of the hospital. During that time these employees prepared food in bulk quantity of over 2500 packets everyday. Which were distributed to the slum dwellers of Bhopal city. Laborers passing from state and national highways were also given free food packets, masks, medicines, sanitizers, biscuit packets and water bottles.

With the help of these female employees sewa sadan eye hospital could help over 2 lakh needy people during this pandemic. Looking to the women empowerment in our country this can be imagined that the theme of UNDP on the occasion of international Women Day was followed very early in the Sewa Sadan Eye Hospital. This will not be exaggerated to mention that the coming era would be of gender equality in the society.
