Chaos prevailed at Gajra Raja Medical College after 27 MBBS students were suspended by the college authorities for allegedly creating ruckus in the college premises.

In addition to the suspension ranging from one month to one year, a total fine amounting to Rs 1.85 lakh too was imposed on the wrongdoers. The incident occurred during an exhibition cricket match held in connection with the annual function of the medical college.

Sources said that a dispute began between two factions of students in the playground after someone had passed some comments on a girl student. Very soon the clash became relentless, injuring students and damaging hospital furniture and vehicles. It is said that one Ashish Dwivedi reached the playing grounds with petrol bombs and hurled them on the other group injuring many students.

Talking to the media Dr SN Iyengar, the Dean of the Gajra Raja Medical College said that the chief culprit behind the brawl was identified as Ashish Dwivedi, a student of the 2016 batch. The Dean also said that besides the one year suspension, a fine of Rs 25000.00 too was imposed on him. In addition to Ashish Dwivedi, Vipin Dwivedi, Abhishek Mittal and Vikas Seth among others too were suspended for various periods.

Dr Iyengar further said that this is the first time that so many students had to be suspended at one go. He also said that there had been reservations among the management and teaching staff about organizing the annual function, but he had conceded to it as a gesture of goodwill towards the students.

He further said that while he loved all the students of the college, incidents like this cannot be tolerated for the overall well being of the students and that the stringent punishment was a result of that viewpoint.
