Harassed by husband and in-laws for dowry, a 21-year-old woman committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling at her Banjara Colony residence under Kolar police station area on Wednesday.

According to the police, Vaishali Thakur was found hanging at her house and was rushed to a JK hospital where she died while undergoing treatment late on Thursday night.

During the investigation, police found that the deceased had runaway marriage with her husband Shivnarayan eight months ago against the will of their parents.

Police have not received any suicide note in the initial investigation but it is possible that the deceased might have written a suicide note which would be searched in the further investigation.

It was found that around two days ago, the deceased had spoken her mother over phone and informed her that she was facing ill behaviour of her husband and in-laws. They harassed her demanding dowry and her husband who is unemployed demanded money and pressurized her for bringing money from her parents.

After the marriage, the family members of Vaishali had stopped contacting her but her mother used to communicate with her.

The family members of Shivnarayan were also against the marriage and were not happy even after her arrival in the home. They used to harass her demanding dowry which would be investigated, said the police.

The post-mortem report is awaited which would help in revealing more details of the suicide. The police have registered a case under section 174 of the CrPC and have started further investigation.
