‘Exhibit of the Month’ of IGRMS inaugurated

Bhopal: The 43rd ‘Exhibit of the Month’ of Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Manav Sanghralaya (IGRMS) has been inaugurated on Tuesday. This time it is a leather puppet of Kerala. The exhibit of the month was inaugurated by Director, IGRMS, Prof Sarit Kumar Chaudhuri and the ladies present at the ceremony. This exhibition has been curated and mounted by Rashmi Shukla, Museum Associate.

The leather puppet of Hanuman represents Tholpavakoothu which is one of the ancient ritualistic art forms of Kerala. Tholpavakoothu is a compound word of three Malayalam terms, Thol means leather, Pava means puppet and Koothu means play.

The theme is the Kamba Ramayana that extends from the birth of Shri Rama to his coronation, which is performed by using leather puppets in special play houses called koothu - madams that are built in the temples dedicated to Bhadrakali. According to a legend, Tholpavakoothu was performed at the request of Bhadrakali who could not witness Ravana's killing as she was fighting the demon Darika.

Thus when it is performed in temples, an idol of the Goddess is usually placed on a platform in front of the playhouse. This art form is especially popular in the Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram districts of Kerala. The performance language uses Tamil, Sanskrit and Malayalam.
