'Ramdev's asanas negate essence of yoga'

A day ahead of the observance of International Yoga  Day, the country’s  yoga icon Baba Ramdev has come under fire from one  who is considered an adept in the theoretical and  practical nitty-gritty of  Yoga.

Debunking the theoretical exposition of yoga that Ramdev embodies, Prof Trilok Chand who is the Founder Director of Yoga Department of Gurukul Kangadi Vishwavidyalaya said Kapal Bhati is not a pranayam at all, adding that it is merely an exercise and should not be practised for over 3-4 minutes. Taking a dig at Ramdev, he said most of the asanas the so-called yoga guru practises and projects negate the essence of yoga. “Ramdev’s teaching means jumping and this is  what can never be a part of Yoga,” he said.

Mentionworthy, Prof Trilok Chand completed his PhD in 1977 from Kashi Hindu University, Varanasi. He claimed that 17 researchers have completed their PhDs under his guidance.According to him, Ramdev has never been a student of yoga and  his close  aide Balkrishan is an ignoramus  as far as Ayurved is concerned. He said Surya Namaskar is not yoga. It is just an exercise. Asanas have been explained in details in yoga literature like Yoga Darshan and what is known as Surya Namaskar does  not  figure  anywhere in the authentic yoga literature. Prof Trilok further claimed that Prophet Momammad had taken five asanas from the Yoga and these are what influenced the posture of namaz. He affirmed Yoga is not just meditation it is also a science, theology, psychology and therapy which encompasses body, mind and intellect.
