‘Mahagatbhandhan' nominates candidates

Bhopal: The left, socialists and other like-minded political parties, who have joined hands and calling their front as ‘Mahagatbhandhan' (grand alliance), on Friday nominated common candidates for Mayor and corporators' polls to be held in Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur city on January 31. Communist Party of India (CPI), CPI (M), Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Sangarsh Dal, Janta Dal (U), Gondwana Gantantra Party (GGP), Rashtriya Samanta Dal have united and are in one accord to fight the BJP and Congress in Jabalpur civic polls, State JD(U) chief Govind Yadav told.

He said a sort of experiment is being carried out at a small scale that is as a prelude to the formal formation of ‘Mahagatbhandhan' at the national level. This development has come at a time when a talk about merger of Janata Parivar was going on at the national level. In a move, aimed at consolidation of opposition forces, six constituents of the erstwhile ‘Janata Party' decided to merge on December 4 last year at a meeting in New Delhi and had authorised SP chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to work out the modalities in that direction. The MP JD (U) chief recalled that in 1974, all Opposition parties had fielded their president Sharad Yadav as their candidate for the lok Sabha from historic Jabalpur city, which capitulated as a big centre of Opposition to Emergency that led to the ouster of Congress then.
