Two RlED cameras installed at two important traffic junctions of the city have fetched the traffic police of the city a penalty of Rs10 lakh in the past two months. These penalties were paid by the city people for jumping the red lights at the mentioned traffic junctions.

The traffic police had installed RlED high resolution cameras at the busy lanter square and Piplilyahana squares of the city two months back on an experimental basis, primarily to reign in the traffic offenders.

According to traffic police, on account of these two RlED cameras put into use since January 27 this year, a total of 12,000 persons were caught on these high resolutions cameras for jumping red light signals. On the basis of data collected from these cameras, the department has already served notices to 6,000 traffic offenders, which included people of the State and outside it as well.

These notices were served after collecting addresses of the people concerned from the RTO. DSP (Traffic) Pradeep Singh Ranawat informed that in the past two months, out of 6,000 people, who were served notices, 2,000 of them have already deposited a penalty of Rs10 lakh with each of them paying a fine of Rs500 for traffic violations.

Apparently satisfied with its experiment, the traffic police has recently installed two more RlED high resolution cameras at Radisson square and Regal square of the city, two another busiest traffic junctions of the city. In due course of time, such cameras will be installed at other busy traffic junctions of the city. Installation of these unmanned cameras will not only help traffic police reduce its manpower, but will also make its coffer richer in terms of penalties to be collected from the city people for violating traffic rules, he said adding that in the coming days, installation of these cameras will go a long way in inculcating traffic sense among the city people.
