Vijay Iyer talks to SHAlINI SAKSENA about the importance of developing skills that make young graduates more job-ready

The reason why many engineers are unable to find jobs after graduationIJ

First, it is important to understand the fact that there are more students than there are jobs. When there are more people and fewer jobs, it is definitely a social challenge. Having said that, another significant challenge is the job-readiness of these graduates. From an industry perspective, companies today do not want to spend much time or resources on training graduates and it is slowly becoming imperative for graduates to be well-trained and be job-ready. India churns out around 12 million graduates including 1.5 million engineers who are academically qualified to join the workforce every year. At least 80-85 per cent of this resource pool require additional skilling to make them job-ready and employable.

How is HCl TalentCare help fill this gapIJ

We are an integrated global talent-solutions company addressing a wide spectrum of entry level employability needs in India, thereby creating a ready talent-pool of professionals for enterprises in IT, BFSI and healthcare sectors. There is an increasing demand for skilled talent in India. We are focused on addressing the complete value chain of sourcing, skilling and staffing requirements for entry-level employments in key industry sectors. It is creating a unique value proposition by offering ‘talent on demand’ to enterprise clients and a ‘career launch pad’ to graduates, thereby filling the skill gap in the industry.

What are some of the skill sets being taughtIJ

The six-12 month, residential training programme addresses critical skills  professional, technical, domain, behavioural, language, and communication. Included are industry-recognised certifications, internships, academia-practitioner led training, practice labs, continuous assessments and counselling to ensure the desired transformation from graduates to best-in-class professionals.

How do these new skills help a graduateIJ

The new skills acquired by a graduate increases his/her jobability quotient transforming him/her into a capable and confident professional with relevant skills and certifications and making him/her job ready and eventually ‘productive-on-arrival’ from an enterprise' perspective.

What is Signature learning Experience and why is it importantIJ

Signature learning Experience (SlE) is our proprietary approach which is built around three distinct pillars: Education, Experience and Exposure. It is a structured approach based on the principles of adult learning that employs state-of-the-art technology and a judicious blend of methods and tools to map a personalised learning path for graduates.  Built by experts in academics, training and instruction design, SlE enables anytime-anywhere learning that is industry-focused with personalised workbooks, digital immersion, online, classroom and on-job learning, continuous tracking and progress reporting.

All candidates undergo three months of on-the-job learning where they are exposed to the practical realities of workplace as they round up their journey by completing a series of industry-recognised certifications. It is very important today as it is an skill-based and job focussed.

What are the future plansIJ

We are targeting enrollments from over 20,000 students by 2018. We are expanding our residential campus capacity to accommodate more graduate students. We aim to have a presence outside India in at least two more geographies. We will also expand our portfolio by launching a new course on social, mobility, analytics and cloud.
