What not to do

Getting into the Indian Institute of Technology is a dream goal for engineering aspirants. While a lot of tips focus on what to do while preparing for the JEE, there are several don'ts that are equally important. Following these guidelines will give you the confidence to crack this entrance exam:

Don't ignore fundamentals: The questions are concept and application based and require a thorough understanding of basic concepts. Bypassing fundamentals will lead to a weak foundation. Make a list of topics or questions which you’ve not understood and strike them off once you have sorted them out.

Never doubt your calibre: Believe in the power of your dreams if you want to take the path to success. Have faith in yourself. Getting into IIT is not an easy task but be consistent in your approach and success will not elude you.

Time management important: A dedicated and timed study roaster is must for all subjects to get equal attention. Time management is crucial. Make a practical plan and stick to it. Any irregularities will hit performance.

No room for confusion: Don't refer to many books. Procure only relevant material and finish thoroughly. Jumping from one book to another confuses you.

Don't ignore weak subject: Every student is prejudiced about one subject or has a weak understanding of it. All subjects carry equal weightage so strengthen your understanding of all subjects and topics. Don't let one subject compromise your chances of securing a good rank. Pay extra attention to the weak subjects. Ask for guidance where you need it.

Don't learn by note: Cramming concepts or mugging them will only retain the subject in your short term memory. Write down formulas and look at them everyday. Work in an effective way so that you understand the concepts and then make them strong through ample practice. Using short cuts to learn a subject will never give you an in depth understanding.

Try not to bunk lectures: Even if you have learned a concept well, consider attending lectures as your revision. You may end up learning something entirely new.

Never study through the night: Instead, adequate sleep will ensure that you are refreshed in the morning and can focus well. lack of sleep may ruin the following day completely, so ensure that you get proper rest and devote the early morning hours for study.

lastly, don't panic: As the exam date approaches or on the day of the exam, pressures and expectations will mount. Keep a cool head and believe that you have put in your best effort. You have come this far and your dream is only a step away. Panicking will waste all the hard work and hours of study that you have devoted. Focus on the goal ahead.

Deciding on the preparation approach that works for you is entirely in your hands. You will be confronted with a lot of advice and suggestions, but find a plan that suits you and stick to it to the end.
