Jatinder Bir Singh, principal, SGGS College of Commerce, talks to SANGEETA YADAV about the journey thus far and the plan to make it to the list of top five colleges in the country
Sri Guru Gobind Singh (SGGS) College of Commerce celebrated its 31 Annual Day. What was it aboutIJ
Considering that we’ve 100-year-old colleges in Delhi University (DU), SGGS College of Commerce is relatively young. Former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha, who graced the annual day celebration as the chief guest, complimented that the way this college is progressing academically, within ten years this college will be ranked amongst the top five colleges in India for providing higher education in Commerce. All this has happened because of the teachers and students and together we’ll work to make this a reality.
What are the biggest change you’ve made so farIJ
I have been associated with this college since 1988. Coming from Economics background and having done doctorate in Financial Economic, I decided to launch refereed journal titled Journal of Business Thought. In this, a lot of teachers from across the universities publish their research papers from time to time.
What is the USP of this collegeIJ
The Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), state-of-the-art infrastructure, extra-curricular activities and academic improvement are the strength of the college. From having state-of-the-art auditorium, three storey library to installing Information and ICT, all this makes teaching learning procedure more interesting. All this is a great leap forward.
The cultural societies of the college are quite famous in the DU circuit. How did this happenIJ
We pay a lot of stress on extra-curricular activities and our dance, drama, fine arts, debate societies and many others have been winning many National awards. It’s a great way for the students to hone their skills and improve their personality. We also make sure that students don’t miss out their classes due to their practise. Either they practise after the class around 12:30 onwards or they do it on Saturday or Sunday.
What about your facultyIJ
About 50 per cent of the teachers are PhD and there is a lot of competition amongst them to publish more research papers. DU has a scheme that allows the teachers to go abroad and do the master degree again in UK or Canada university. Many teachers have got selected for fellowship programmes and presented their research papers at the international conferences. DU has also sanctioned our college for DU Innovation Projects wherein three faculty members along with some students to work and learn from the survey and research work.
What are the most popular course offered at SGGSIJ
We’ve two DU approved programmes — one year PG diploma in International Marketing and PG diploma in Business Jounalism and Corporate Communication. These courses are not available in other college and/or university.
What are the upcoming plansIJ
The UGC has sanctioned for a girls’ hostel. Many outstation girls faced a lot of problems related to rent overcharged and money not been forfeited by the landlords. Its blueprint is getting ready and within two years, it will be ready.
