Translation seminar

The School of Translation Studies and Training, Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), is organising a national seminar on Translation in the age of Globalisation: Cultures languages Identities on March 21, 22 and 23, 2013.

Dr MS Sikandar, director, NBT, will be the guest of honour while Prof Namwar Singh, eminent critic, shall be the chief guest.

Today, India is one of the most interesting cases of ironies of globalisation. This irony extends to both promotion of certain languages and cultures as well as erosion or endangerment of other languages and cultures. These processes have been generally studied in terms of politics of culture, production and formation. Translation has played its role in them, and would increasingly do in future

Globalisation can be traced to the forms of development of modern capitalism. It has provided us opportunities to understand and interact with cross sections of societies, languages and nationalities. The exponential development of ICT and mass communication has taken the entire world in its fold. In such a situation, translation has assumed significant role as a communication facilitator among diverse cultures and in the construction and preservation of those ethnicities and sub-nationalities.

Moreover, we live in an age in which hegemony of one language, culture and identity is getting established over others in the process of globalisation.

The major challenge before humanity is in the fact that major discursive practices in the globalised are being mediated by one language i.e. English. It has considerably influenced translational practices and conditioned construction of identities and cultures.
