A training programme on international law on forestry with a special emphasis on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation got underway at OP Jindal Global University campus on January 6, 2014.
Organised by the Jindal Global law School, the training programme has been designed to give senior IFS officers the opportunity to understand the international arrangements on forests and important role of forests in addressing the climate change.
The programme aims at exposing the global context of the science and practice of forest policy and management. It has been structured in the context of the initiatives to reduce carbon emissions by combating deforestation and degradation of forests and to enhance the forest service’s capacity to ensure livelihoods of people dependent on forest resources.
AK Srivastava, Additional Director General, Ministry of Environment and Forests said: “A judicious balance is required to be struck between conservation and development to prevent indiscriminate diversion of forest land for non-forestry purposes, while at the same time ensuring that the essential development needs of the society are not compromised.”
Prof Bharat H Desai, chairman, Center for International legal Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University stressed the need to address the challenges facing biodiversity conservation in order to adopt sustainable principles and legal strategies.
