SRM's global education model

Published on:

It has been a long cherished vision of the founder of the SRM Group of Educational Institutions, Dr TR  Pachamuthu, to extend the significant achievements made by the university to areas not hitherto benefitted by such multi-faceted approaches in higher education. The genesis of SRM University, Sikkim, is the result of such a noble vision when it became a reality with the passing of the Ramasamy Memorial University, Sikkim Act by the State legislature in October, 2013. The new university envisages a global educational model by combining modernity with the tenants of native wisdom.

Programmes Offered

The SRM university, Sikkim which was inaugurated on August 4 at Gangtok, will be conducting five programmes from the Schools of Management and Information Technology. The programmes includes BBA, MBA, BVoc (Banking), BSc (IT) and MCA.

These programmes have been chosen keeping in mind the employment opportunities that the university can provide to the prospective students. The pedagogy and the methodology will be in tune with the requirements of contemporary technology based delivery systems. There will be value additions to improve the employability  of the students.

Campus life

The city campus is getting ready in a five-storied building with nearly 45,000 sq built up area. Modern amenities will be provided to students with magnificent infrastructure and excellent academic milieu. The main campus will be created in the course of time in a sprawling area to international standards. Students will be drawn from across India and abroad, to study and enjoy a vibrant campus life in a serene and sylvan setting, ideal for the pursuit of higher education. The natives of Sikkim would be provided with special privileges in terms of admissions and scholarships.

Distance Education

The emphasis on distance education is growing among policy makers to meet the goals of higher education in India. The country needs to achieve at least 50 per cent in Gross Enrollment Ratio in order to sustain a GDP of 10 per cent. These targets can only be met by deploying alternative methods in higher education and distance education. Creating qualitative and inclusive distance learning programmes to reach out to far flung populations of the North-Eastern hill regions is one of the primary objectives of SRM University, Sikkim. Every effort will be taken by the university to help learners to gain access to the portals of higher education, through the use of state -of- the- art technologies in distance learning. The technology enabled learning would include online and interactive methodologies. The SRM University, Sikkim is well positioned to make a significant impact on Open Distance learning programmes as well.
