The Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) has established a special cell within its Equal Opportunity Office (EOO) to help students with disability.

Prof Sudhir K. Sopory, vice-chancellor of JNU, said that JNU is providing all possible facilities to disabled students by giving them opportunities and empowering them, and for this purpose a special cell has been created within Equal Opportunity Office (EOO) of the University to oversee the challenges faced by them.

He added that the university is proud of those disabled students who have excelled in studies and sports.

He was speaking at a seminar organised by the Visually Challenged Student’s Forum and EOO to celebrate the International Day of Persons with Disability 2015. The theme of the seminar was ‘Marking New Horizons from Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’.

On this occasion, Prof Manu Mittal, chief advisor, EOO at JNU said that JNU’s EOO is first of its kind in Indian universities taking care of visually and physically challenged students as well as students from marginalised sections of society. She said that all educational institutions should have an EOO and that JNU is ready to share its experience and challenges by establishing such an office for effective implementation of policies for disabled and marginalised section students.

Dr Rameh Gaur, university librarian, said that the JNU library is well equipped to take care of the needs of visually and physically handicapped students. JNU’s Central library with its sprawling Helen Keller unit exclusively for students with visual disabilities provides various facilities to the students.
