The JEE (main) exams are two months away. By now, students must have completed their syllabus. But to be selected, it is necessary to have speed and confidence on examination day says, Ramesh Batlish

The JEE(main, offline) will be held on April 6, 2014 and online between April 9 and 19. Approximately 14 lakh students are expected to appear for the same and only 1.5 lakh students from all categories will qualify to take the JEE (advanced) test. Those who also qualify to be in the top 20 percentile of Class XII Boards and clear the JEE (advanced) will make it to the final merit list of the IITs.

A serious aspirant ideally must have completed the syllabus by now. The following points will however count. Clearing JEE (main) is not a difficult task. Systematic approach towards its preparation will help students get admission into one of the top National Institutes of Technology (NITs) provided a student follows general preparation strategy. These are:

Speed and accuracy is an important aspect which comes from extensive practice of questions.

Always mark time with clock while solving JEE (main) papers. In Maths use short methods for calculations, skip irrelevant steps to save time.

The most important thing is clarity of concepts and regular practice in problem nJEE (main) is not difficult. However, its questions do need different tricks to solve tricky ones.

Focus on solving the problems on your own, while preparing for the exam. Start with conventional methods of problems solving but improvise constantly and build shortcuts and ways of problem solving.

Both speed and strike rate matter. You need to be quick and accurate to achieve high scores. High speed with less accuracy can actually ruin your results.

Never use calculator while preparing for the JEE (main). Being adept in mental calculations can actually increase speed to a great extent.

Select questions wisely. If you solve easy and average questions correctly, you can easily get through. You may attempt difficult ones later to make better rank, after having attempted easy and moderate questions.

Gather and implement tips, gain confidence, be positive, and you will ace JEE  provided common mistakes are avoided like:

Opt for offline exam if you do not feel comfortable with online exam.

Watch speed if you are appearing in online mode, make use of rough sheet given to you wherever necessary and immediately update the invigilator in case you encounter a technical problem with the system.

Read and follow all the instructions given in the question-papers very carefully. Plan time, keeping an extra time in hand for revision. Even those appearing for online exam shall be given the option to scroll back the attempted questions and change if necessary before they actually submit.

Prioritise after a quick glance and start answering with the question you know best and move progressively to the ones you find difficult after attempting the complete paper. Attempt questions carrying no negative marks.

Don’t be nervous if you find the paper tough since it is the relative performance that counts. Hence, put your best analytical mind to work, it will take you ahead

In order to crack JEE (main) one will have to be particular about:

Complete knowledge of the JEE (main) syllabus.

Sound analysis of the exam.

Changing pattern of the exam in last few years.

Right strategy.

Confidence to crack it by regular practise.

Don’t panic, No one is perfect. Stay calm and give it your best.
