With Supreme Court quashing the NEET, students taking the medical entrance exam are confused. But C Muthu Kumari says that working hard is the key to ace this test

With National Eligibility cum Entrance Test  (NEET) scrapped, it is now back to All India Pre-Medical Test (AIPMT) for medical aspirants. The undergraduate level entrance exam scene has seen so many changes in the past two years that the students taking the exam have become confused.  NEET which was introduced as a much touted common entrance exam to medical colleges in 2013, is now quashed after a verdict to that effect by the Supreme Court in July this year.

The CBSE has taken the decision to bring back the All India Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Entrance Test. This has only added to the confusion in students’ minds about the pattern of the exam, syllabus covered etc. To help clarify the doubts of all students preparing for the 2014 exam there are a few things that one must keep in mind.

First things first, the AIPMT is not like the earlier version of the exam. This exam will, in fact, be very similar to NEET 2013 and will follow the same syllabus and pattern. So a student’s preparation strategies for AIPMT 2014 need not change from those for NEET. The exam will be in the pen and paper mode.

The earlier AIPMT was a two-tier test while AIPMT 2014 will have just one single paper. Entrance exam will consist of one  paper comprising of 180 questions in total — Physics: 45 questions, Chemistry: 45 questions, Botany: 45 questions and Zoology: 45 questions. The exam will take place on May 4, 2014.

The main difference between the two exams is that AIPMT 2014 will only be conducted for the 15 per cent national quota in Government medical/dental colleges across India except J&K and Andhra Pradesh. The State directorate of medical education and research will conduct its own entrance exam in these States.

Since the AIPMT 2014 will not replace the various State-level and institute level entrance exams (unlike NEET which was a common entrance exam), it means that medical aspirants will have to go through multiple exams for multiple colleges. Students will have to check the syllabus to prepare for entrances for individual institutes.

So all medical aspirants who are preparing for AIPMT 2014 should sit down and prepare for the exam by strengthening those basic concepts. Do not ignore reviewing previous year papers to get a sense of important questions. Study the weightage of marks allocated to each portion of the syllabus and prepare accordingly.

In physics, remember to prepare the topics mechanic and electrodynamics thoroughly as these are important from the point of view of entrance exams. In organic chemistry, prepare name reactions thoroughly and explain them with appropriate examples. Keep watching the news and work hard to achieve the  dream.
