The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) organised a public lecture on Food Security in an era of climate change at the convention centre recently.
The public lecture was delivered by prof MS Swaminathan, Member of Rajya Sabha and Chairperson for Chair for Sustainable Development. He focused on various dimensions of food security and genesis of green revolution.
He also highlighted the importance of increasing food grain production in the backdrop of National Food Security Bill and changing climate.
In his lecture, Swaminathan focused on how climate change will affect all the four dimensions of food security: food availability, accessibility, utilisation and systems stability.
He urged the participants to make the world a better place now, and for generations to come. He emphasised on various strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change and also elaborated on the significance of sustainable agriculture in this era of climate change.
In the function, a book entitled Evergreen Revolution in Agriculture: Pathway to a Green Economy authored by prof PC Kesavan and prof MS Swaminathan was released.
While speaking about the book, prof Kesavan reflected on the approaches by which the evergreen revolution can enhance agricultural productivity in small farms and also create income-generating livelihoods to ensure food security at individual household level for farming, fishing and landless rural families.
