GGSIPU’s East Delhi campus

We shape the buildings, buildings shape us,” Smriti Irani, HRD Minister, said at the recent foundation stone-laying ceremony of IP University’s East Delhi campus at Surajmal Vihar.

She said that educational institutions have to play bigger role in shaping the society in positive directions. “And it’s our duty to return back to the society at least something,” she added.  She advised the university to sign a memorandum of understanding with the local municipal bodies for one-year mandatory internship for students of the proposed two university schools — University School of Architecture and Planning and University School of Design of the East Delhi Campus — for societal benefit.

She also proposed starting a centre for women studies and maintaining gender equality on the campus by providing equal number of hostel rooms for boy and girl students of the two proposed university schools. East Delhi’s BJP MP Maheish Girri, who was also present at the occasion said that a demand for a university by the residents of the East Delhi has been a long standing one.

“It is an irony that despite a sizeable 40 per cent share of students alone in  the East Delhi, there was not a university campus here. There is North Campus, South Campus, but no East Campus.  On this foundation stone laying ceremony, we strive to turn the East Delhi into a big educational hub,” Girri said.

Vice-chancellor Anil K Tyagi said that the campus was being developed on sprawling 18.75 acres on an estimated cost of `271 crore.  It’ll be country’s first net-zero energy campus having all in-house facilities to deal with power, water, drainage and waste. At present, the University School of Architecture and Planning is being run from the temporary campus located at Khashmere Gate. The two schools will offer six courses including four UG and two master programmes in the field of architecture, planning and design.

The university also plans to start research and specialised courses once the new campus starts functioning. The idea behind the new campus is to provide world-class infrastructure for the students of architecture, planning and design. The BJP MlAs Om Prakash Sharma and Jitender Singh Shanti and mayor Meenakshi Suryavanshi were also present on the occasion.

Get connected with Elumn’

The Entrance Prime.com, an online test preparation portal, has come up with a platform — Elumn — that serves as a private social network for an institute’s alumni. It is an online networking platform that integrates with the institute’s website and enables its alumni to search for their mates and stay connected with their alma mater.

The associated institutes are also authorised to post newsletters, send bulk e-mails and SMS to alumni, share old pictures and also control the membership requests.  The networking platform houses innovative features like alumni articles, alumni pictures, old picture library, alumni success stories, alumni testimonials, search a classmate, invite friends, alumni newsletter, organisation news and alumni friend groups.

Interactions between present students and those who have passed-out help the former in the long run as it enables them to share opportunities among themselves and also learn from each other’s experiences.
