Oxford University Press (OUP) recently launched Cultural Diversity, linguistic Plurality and literary Traditions in India, a book also prescribed by the University of Delhi. The book was launched on the side-lines of a panel discussion organized on the broad theme of celebrating diversity in Indian literature, dwelling on our rich tradition of oral literature and the need to shift from the practice of prioritising written literature in academia. The panel was chaired by Prof Kavita Sharma, president, South Asian University, and saw participation from Prof Anvita Abbi, Prof Varsha Das and Prof. Sukrita Paul Kumar. The panel discussed topics that covered different aspects and hues of cultural and literary diversity in India.

Prof Sukrita Paul Kumar, chief editor of Cultural Diversity, linguistic Plurality and literary Traditions in India said: “The issue of cultural diversity is acknowledged as a crucial concern by important international bodies such as UNESCO. To allow democratic initiatives and creativity to flourish, the principle of pluralism has to be actively established, cherished, understood and celebrated.”
