Digant Sharma, academic dean AD The Design School, tells you that due to globalisation, a plethora of jobs have opened in the design sector. However, one must have certain traits to excel in this field

The lifestyle and economic status has seen a major growing graph and this is one of the reasons that there are so many professional platforms created for youngsters to choose a career for themselves.Architecture, engineering, medical, accountancy, humanities, honors in a subject or masters were limited choices for the earlier generation to choose from. The focus therefore, was to get a Government job. The present scenario is totally different and youngsters want to make a career in a field where they can look forward to be  self-employed with options of also getting a job with private sector, specifically MNC.

Globalisation has added a lot to the scenario and the transition of time is the evidence to prove that how things have changed in last couple of decades. Today, a career in designing is considered to be a a very good option. A designer not only gets paid well, but there is name and fame as well if one is committed to hard work. Design does not have any thumb rule to be judged as right or wrong but the appreciation of the end product leads to the final outcome of whole process to be defined as a ‘good or bad design’.

let us take an interior design who is expected to be an expert in three major streams— design, construction and esthetics and all the three streams have detailing involved in form of interior and exterior for design material, engineering for construction, drawing and art for esthetics. Interior design is considered to be a branch of architecture which has been an ever green field since the civilisations have prevailed. Although in the contemporary format even the field of architecture is considered to have a range of super specialisations as the customised needs are growing for making readymade as well as tailor-made spaces.

Interior design caters to a target audience who are conscious with standard of living and also need the spaces to reflect their personalities so the study of design does not only incorporate the technical knowledge of design and construction but it also needs study of psychology of an individual as well as masses.

In the academic arena there are certain criteria to categorise the core fields of specialisations. For example getting into the medical stream requires the base of PCB (Physics, Chemistry, Biology). Similarly, the pre-requisite of opting engineering or architecture stream requires a base of PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics). It is important that a student in Class X understands the importance of the marks scored in the exam. These marks become a deciding factor for the student to select his career. But if he fails to do so, it becomes too late as the orthodox methods (which are also right to a certain extent) do not allow the student to pursue the desired field. The design field is free from all these complexities and formalities and there is no preconception of any educational limitations in terms of what stream the student had in senior secondary level. Moreover, the age is not a prejudice to opt the design stream.

However a student needs to ensure certain basic and essential elements that the student who is willing to get into the design profession is not just luring for it on the basis of glamour he,foresees in the said profession but rather considers it to be a very serious profession which can be turned into a opportunity of self employment. These elements should be rated in a customised manner and the student who is looking forward to make a career in design needs to make sure that the profession he is looking for is his forte.
