The Congress on Sunday declared incumbent Charanjit Singh Channi as its Chief Ministerial face for February 20 elections.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, during the party’s “Awaaz Punjab Di” virtual rally at Ludhiana, announced Channi’s name for coronation if the party comes to power in the forthcoming polls — virtually putting a lid over the power struggle within the Congress’ Punjab unit.
“It is not a decision of Rahul Gandhi but of Punjab. I can have an opinion but I can’t decide. People of Punjab said that we want a gareeb ghar ka CM who understands poor, and I agreed to it,” said Rahul after making the announcement in the presence of Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu, who trailed behind Channi in the race for the CM’s face.
Thanking the people after the announcement, Channi said: “This is a big battle which I can’t fight alone. I don’t have the money, courage to fight it. The people of Punjab will fight this battle.”
