The Macquarie University (MU) has signed a MoU with Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar, Punjab, to support student and faculty exchange, joint research collaboration and explore joint GIAN-VAJRA courses where overseas Indians can work with Indian institutions to deepen their engagement in research and development programmes, especially in science and technology.

MU and IIT-Ropar have identified bio-medical engineering (imaging, sensing and instrumentation), telecommunications (wireless technologies, networking, optical devices and communication, MIMO systems and satellite communication), mechatronics and robotics, power electronics and water and environmental science as key research areas. Professor Barbara Messerle, executive dean of the faculty of Science and Engineering at MU, Australia said: “The agreement will serve to be a great example of the collaborative cooperation that is possible between international institutions. With this strategic partnership in place, both institutions will benefit greatly, and will allow the creation of new ideas, lead to further innovation in science and technology and encourage students to broaden their horizons.”

Professor SK Das, director, IIT-Ropar, said: “The MoU with Macquarie University is an important milestone for us and we hope the two universities will have fruitful research collaborations and exchange in the coming years,”

IIT-Ropar will also be hosting its 6th Convocation Ceremony later this week, at the sprawling 500 acres of permanent campus situated on the bank of river Sutlej that will be operational in 2018. The convocation will be graced by the chief guest, Prof Ashok Jhunjhunwala, principal advisor to Minister of Power, New and Renewable Energy.
