Since time immemorial the guru-shishya parampara or pupil-teacher relationship has been an inevitable part of the Indian education system. The propagation of knowledge from the master to pupils through face-to-face interaction has been the crux of edification. However, this concept has undergone a metamorphosis. With technology taking giant strides, the process of teaching-learning is no more confined within the walls of a classroom.

A gamut of online learning tools have mushroomed across the education landscape today. The technology-based learning materials and teaching engagement provides an interactive and immersive experience to students. However it leaves a lot to be desired in terms of providing a comprehensive learning environment to students as the human element is absent.

This paucity can be eliminated by combining the best of traditional delivery with disruptive innovation. Blended learning is proving to be a kaleidoscope of educational modes which provides the students with a multifarious range of learning experiences. Just like the kaleidoscope changes patterns with the slightest of movement, blended learning is a versatile approach which undergoes change in terms of teacher roles, physical space, delivery methods and scheduling to suit students’ requirements. Blended learning does not use technology just as a frill but as a tool to complement and enhance traditional pedagogy.

There have been myriad of drivers which have led to the evolution and growth of blended learning. The flipped classroom concept is a perfect example of blended learning which adopts the instructional strategy wherein students acquire the knowledge by access to learning materials outside the classroom as per their convenience; whereas classroom time is used in a more constructive manner to assimilate the knowledge through discussions, problem-solving and interaction between the teacher and pupils. This inculcates high order thinking skills and provides experiential learning. With this approach the students can focus more on picking up the nuances of various topics with teachers giving more importance to application of concepts in the classroom.

The phenomenon of augmented learning has the potential of transforming the dynamics of blended learning. It can open up the realms of virtual reality. The unprecedented advancement in technology and software application allows the environment to adapt to the learner. The content is customised to the learners’ natural environment through the audio-visual medium. By incorporating game-based learning, students get an interactive experience that stimulates discovery and learning.

With teachers opening their arms to embrace technology, blended learning has received a major fillip. With development in the field of cloud computing and Application Program Interface, sky is the limit for blended learning. It has the potential to completely revolutionise the education scenario by harnessing the true potential of technology without compromising on traditional teaching-learning practices which promotes cognitive and skill development of students.
