‘The 30-90-120 days is tried and tested'
Aditya Berlia, member management board of Apeejay Stya and Svran group tells Deebashree Mohanty that the perfect orientation for the employees is the newage 30-90-120 days plan. Here's all that you should know about this plan and why it is considered the best
THE PERFECT ORIENTATION
The perfect induction programme creates a 30-90-120 day plan for the employee with measurable outcomes, introduces them to the people needed for them to be successful, quickly takes them through the current state of affairs of their role, briefs them on how the organisation does things (leaves, expenses, and reviews for examples), and ensures they know and are involved in key dates and deadlines for the next 90 days.
ITS ADVANTAGES
When you join a new organisation you are a bit of sea, no matter how much homework you’ve done, or you know about the industry. At the same time, your peers, juniors and superiors immediately start to form judgements about your abilities. A 30-90-120 days plan gives structure and measurable goals as well as activity plan that is relevant and measurable. Most people take at least 100 days to properly settle into a role, and this provides a fantastic model for them to contribute immediately while still learning how the organisation works.
HOW TO UTIlISE THIS TO THE FUllEST
It is sad that these days most people go to interviews without even spending a few hours completely researching an organisation. This induction time is the perfect opportunity to become an expert at how the organisation machine works, and how your role and function fits into the bigger and the smaller picture. Being new you get a few months to ask difficult questions, meet different people without an agenda, and cut across functional roles in the name of ‘figuring out things.’ After than it becomes much harder to pretend to be a student or even have the time to get access to wide variety of people and information. Successful people have been known to even request to shadow different people from the top brass down to random employees to figure out how things actually function.
BEST APPROACH
Most companies don’t spend enough time designing great orientation programmes, and most employees don’t use the time very effectively. I’ve seen employees squander excellent face time with some of the most brilliant people to only realise later that they will rarely get access to them again as part of the role.
