Trash the console

Iknoor Kaur

DJ Tommy visited India for the first time recently and played some of his characteristic numbers. He spoke to I Kaur about the conventional influence on his music

His curly hair, witty smile and thumping beats may have stirred the world, but in India, Tommy Trash is known for only one thing — The End! The Australian DJ’s chartbuster track not only added rhythm to the EDM scene in this country, but also marked his name on our tour bus. He was recently spotted at Kitty Su playing some of his classics.

Trash was very excited to come to India. He said, “I couldn’t even sleep on the plane here. I had heard so much about India that I couldn’t wait to see it. The spirit of this place is exceptional. I didn’t have much time to explore the country but at some stage I will definitely come and do so.”

Trash played a mixture of everything at the gig but he was most excited about his song Cascade. “I think after The End, people in India have loved Cascade the most. So I wanted to see the way people react to it. And I can say, it was the best feeling ever,” he shared.

According to him, the best response he ever got to his song The End was from India and Europe. He said, “Music has a strange language. Sometimes it can just get into your heart. I think that is what happened with The End. It struck a chord with people.”

The 34-year-old DJ hasn’t heard much of Indian music but seemed fascinated by the Sitar. “In Australia the only music we hear is Bollywood. But I love the Sitar. I think it is a fabulous instrument. I want to make a dance track with Sitar inputs in it. That will be a true chartbuster,” he said.

At present Trash will be touring around the world before he gets started on his next. “I take inspiration from almost anything and everything. I love to travel as well. But I think my main influence has been classical music. I loved Nirvana and that impacted my music greatly. So whatever I do next will be in sync with my classical obsession,” he signed off.
