Choreographer and director Remo D’ Souza had a conversation with Utsav Mishra on the second season of Dance+
It has taken Remo D’ Souza many years to reach where he is now and he has no plans to give up the high ground either. After stints in choreographing for Bollywood and a host of other shows, he turned superjudge with his show Dance+ last year. The show become a success and Remo is back with the second season.
“This show is very close to me specially second season because this time we have Punit Pathak as our new captain and this time you will get to see new dance forms and new talents,” said Remo who conceptualised the show in a way where a contestant does not have the pressure of exploring into other genre of dance outside of their comfort zone.
He was quite excited and when we asked why, he said that the new season would have dance forms not even he has heard of. “like a duet doing a ghetto dance form and dance hall style,” said Remo who had no inhibitions in confessing that he likes to learn from the contestants. He harbours a dream of opening a dance institute where anybody who wants to learn how to dance can enroll and can pass with a certificate. “If I get the chance, I want to introduce ballet dance in India,” he said.
Remo, who recently won a National Film Award for Best Choreography for the song Deewani Mastani from Bajirao Mastani, said this year the level of show will be tougher because the level of dance and its different forms have increased for which contestants have to work harder. “I want the show to have the same level set by the international franchise So You Think You Can Dance. So its going to be tougher for the contestants to get excellent marks from us because this time our judgment will be at an all time high. So one mistake can fail to get marks,” he said.
Work wise, he feels blessed to have worked with few of the biggest stars in the industry. “Choreographing Ranbir Kapoor for Battameez dil was easy,” said Remo, who went to make India’s first dance-based movie ABCD and followed it up with a sequel.
“I was lucky to have great dancers like Punit, Raghav, loren, Salman and Varun for these films,” he added. Off late, he is busy with his forthcoming A Flying Jatt with Tiger Shroff.
