Kratika Sengar spoke to Prerna Sharma about her telly journey and serial that promotes empowerment

Kratika Sengar is a well-known face on the small screen. Most of us know her as Rani laxmi Bai of Jhansi Ki Rani (JKR) and Aarti of Punar Vivaah. The actress strongly believes in playing substantial female characters. Punar Vivaah, has set a benchmark for itself as it promotes remarriage and other women issues. The serial has completed a year now and viewers have seen Aarti go through many turmoils after her remarriage to Yash.

Kratika was in the city to celebrate Women’s day with the members of some NGOs. Since its launch, Punar Vivaah has raised  questions as to why there is separate set of rules for men and women when it comes to remarriage. The idea of a mother-in-law taking a vow to get her daughter-in-law remarried, after her son has deserted her for no fault of hers, has appealed to viewers worldwide. “I think the gradual adjustments between two people, who have been married in the past, and how they face troubles before they come together have been depicted in a realistic manner. Audiences have found a story that they can closely relate to. I am happy that the story has stick to its pattern and has not turned into the saas-bahu saga,” she said.

“I am proud that Punar Vivaah has brought about a social change and that is very gratifying for all of us who work on the show. The show that set off a trend for many more shows. To be a frontrunner in this TRP-driven industry is an every day challenge. I think I have lived up to the expectations of the viewers,” she added.

Acting happened to her by chance! She was an introvert student and was asked to perform a character in a senior’s documentary. That documentary was shown to Ekta Kapoor, who chose her for a character in Kasautii Zindagi Kii (KZK) and since then she has never looked back.

“My role in JKR was challenging. I went under rigorous training for horse riding, malkhamb and Martial arts. I was taught to sit, eat and walk like a man as my character was of a bold female.”
