Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, in Varanasi on Thursday. The meeting comes during Dr Ramgoolam’s week-long State visit to India from September 9 to September 16.

According to a Government statement, the interaction reflects the “special and unique relationship” that continues to flourish between India and Mauritius.

The bilateral talks between the two leaders are expected to focus on strengthening development cooperation, capacity building and maritime collaboration under India’s vision for the Indian Ocean Region, known as MAHASAGAR (Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security and Growth Across Region). Mauritius, a key partner in this initiative, holds a pivotal place in India’s ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.

The Varanasi summit builds upon the momentum generated by Prime Minister Modi’s own visit to Mauritius in March 2025, where both nations elevated their ties to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership. The renewed focus now includes sustainable development, digital transformation and climate resilience, issues critical not only to the two nations but to the collective aspirations of the global south.

Mauritian Prime Minister Ramgoolam arrived in Varanasi on Wednesday and was warmly welcomed by Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel and State Finance Minister Suresh Khanna.

Mauritius PM participated in the iconic Ganga aarti and visited the revered Kashi Vishwanath Temple in the holy city of Kashi.
