Gestational diabetes, a condition which pregnant women exhibit, has seen a marked increase in India. It increases chance of complications and can lead to still birth and Type 2 diabetes. Apart from medication, gestational diabetes is treatable with management of blood glucose levels through a modified diet and regular exercise. Dr Rekha Sharma gives you a diet and says six-seven small meal plans work well as they curb blood sugar peaks

Breakfast: Start the day with a glass of low fat milk and calcium-rich almonds or walnuts and eggs, vegetarians can substitute sprouts or soy for an egg. Add foods high in fibre, like fresh fruits, whole wheat or multi-grain breads and cereals

Mid-morning: Whole fruit or cup of tea (without sugar) with a whole grain cookie

lunch: Include a healthy salad made with leafy greens with a light dressing made with a neutral tasting, heart-healthy oil. Include whole pulses, whole grain chapattis and yoghurt with the meal

Evening: Include a small healthy snack. High-fibre crackers make good snacks but be mindful of portions.

Dinner: Soups and other appetizers are good additions. Enjoy the favourite green vegetables, whole pulses, peas or beans, cottage cheese, along with whole grain chapattis

Bedtime: A cup of low fat milk (if the dinner is early)

Drink plenty of water throughout the day and avoid going hungry. limit intake of colas, alcohol, sweets and desserts.
