Pekerman departs as Colombia coach
bogota: Colombia football coach Jose Pekerman has announced he does not wish to renew his contract and wished the national team the best ahead of the 2022 World Cup. "I'm sad not to be continuing; look at the guys and see what they achieved. The team drives them. To see Colombia so high in the FIFA national team rankings was so exciting. We achieved our goals," Pekerman said at a press conference on Tuesday. Pekerman coached the Colombian national team for six years, leading them to the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup. However, a poor showing from Colombia during this year's World Cup in Russia led to questions over the continuation of his tenure. He said the Colombian national press, which had reported rumours of his potential return to manage Argentina's national team, had told lies about his exit.
Loew rules out Ozil return
munich: Germany coach Joachim Loew has ruled out Mesut Ozil's return to the national team following the player's retirement from international football. Loew says Ozil "clearly resigned so it's not an issue." Ozil, who made 92 appearances for Germany, quit the national team in July following the furor over his photo with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and accused the German football federation, its president, fans and media of racism against people with Turkish roots. The Arsenal midfielder said he felt he was being made a scapegoat for Germany's embarrassing World Cup exit. However, he appeared to keep the door open to a return when he said he would never play for the team "as long as I have this feeling of racism and a lack of respect." Loew says "Mesut decided to go another way."
