Wary V-C seeks security on campus

PNS

A police station or a police picket on the campus of a university sounds bizarre. But such a demand was raised in the Monday November 23 video conferencing of higher and technical education secretary Ajay Kumar Singh.

Sources said the vice-chancellor of the Siddhu Kano Murmu  University ( SKMU) had raised this demand of setting up either a police station or police picket on this Dumka based university wherein the VC SKMU Dumka had described the scenario there as one ‘where extremists and terrorists roam around’.

A visibly perturbed secretary had then countered this VC for his making this demand of a police station right on the campus but perhaps remembering the gory incident that took place in K O college Gumla,  wherein an enraged student had murdered the professor in charge of this college in his chamber said that he ( Ajay) would take up this matter with the Home department said an insider who had attended this video conferencing.

VCs’ video conferencing called by the secretary is being seen as a step forward as no VC or his team is left with any escape route now. This video conferencing is labeled as mother of all meetings for the VCs said sources.

Sources said in this maiden video conferencing of secretary the vice chancellor of Vinoba Bhave university Hazaribag was conspicuously absent. Sources said he was being represented by his convener of college development council (CCDC) in this video conferencing. Secretary Ajay found this absence of the VC VBU Hazaribag from the video conferencing improper and began to query CCDC who just fumbled for words to explain as to where his VC was after all.

The Secretary asked the VCs to engage guest lecturers of eminence for which fund would not be any problem. Ajay also wanted universities to set up board of governance and board of management for RUSA ( Rashtriya Ucch Shikccha Abhiyan).Secretary’s aides sitting there in this video conferencing in National Informatics Centre (NIC) Ranchi asked the VCs to update the websitesas the aides lamented the web sites are either honk or stale. Secretary higher & technical education too pressed for updating of the web sites of the colleges asking VCs to post latest photographs of the ‘condition’ of the colleges and departments.

Vice Chancellor of NP university A N Ojha said that he had apprised the secretary of the grounding of the women’s college in latehar as it could not take off for want of fund and sanctioned posts. The take off fund for this college amounts to 7 crores.Secretary has asked that all obsolete courses be discarded in favour of courses which have more employability.
