Jharkhand students, who took Intermediate examinations conducted by Jharkhand Academic Council (JAC) this year, have apparently developed interest for Science.

The result, declared by the JAC on Saturday, said that the Science report card was excellent showing 63.65 per cent students coming out with flying colours. The JAC could pull out the performance after a wait of over a decade and relentless efforts of its chairman, Anand Bhushan. The Commerce stream result also improved after five years with 75.83 per cent students clearing the examinations.

Statistics have revealed that the State-wide pass percentage in Science had dipped to 38.28 in 2013 from 48.37 in 2012. Commerce and Arts, on the other hand, had seen more success with 70.55 and 72.92, respectively, vis-à-vis 2012, 66.04 and 71.09.

Significantly, girls have outshone boys marvelously in the intermediate examination. As many as 67.22 percent girls and 62.39 boys have cleared the intermediate examination in science stream. In commerce stream 83.96 percent girls and 71.71 percent boys cleared the examination. Icing on the cake came from the girls, as they grabbed all the three top crowns in the science steam.

Debopriya Shukla (16) of Pakur Raj +2 High School is the Science stream topper as well as the State topper bagging 89.4 per cent. Rakhi Rani Biswas of Indal + 2 High School Muri and Saksham Jha of St Xavier’s College have secured second and third positions in this stream with 87.4 and 87 per cent marks respectively.

Students of Ursuline Inter College Ranchi have grabbed the top three positions in the Commerce stream. The names include Rani Tarannum, Nisha Jha and Gulafshan Parween, who have scored 83.6, 82 and 81.8 percentages. However, the third rank here is shared with Abhishek Chauhan of Jubilee College Bhurkunda.

Palamau and Pakur districts recorded the maximum pass percentages of students comprising boys and girls in Science and Commerce streams with 82.780 per cent and 88. 600 per cent marks respectively.

Appreciating the efforts of the entire State education fraternity for this excellent performance, JAC chairman Anand Bhushan highlighted the shortage of teachers at this intermediate level where the classes were managed with subject teachers, who could teach other subjects as well of the same stream.

“It would now be easier for the successful inter-students to take competitive exams since the results are declared 20 days before, compared to previous years. Earlier, we would publish the inter results by May 30. For convenience of these students, we will be sending the marksheets to the respective schools and colleges within a week,” Bhushan said.

Also, he added that the intermediate arts result will be published before time like these two streams. Bhushan maintained that the post-result one week counseling for these passing out students will commence from May 12onwards.

Notably, the result was declared by State Human Resources Development (HRD) Minister Geetashree Oraon accompanied by the department’s Principal Secretary K Vidyasagar, Director Secondary Education Praveen Toppo and JAC officials.

While praising the outstanding performance of the “fair sex”, Oraon said, “In the upcoming budget, we have proposed to open Women’s College and Intermediate College in every district of the State.”

On the other hand, she felt that essential requirements should be made in government schools so that students are not inclined to private schools.

Expressing a solution to the minister’s “worry”, Vidyasagar said that in the next six months the department is trying to fulfill the teaching vacancies. Presently, there are around 230 government schools and 144 private schools under JAC. “We want the inter colleges to run in both public and private sectors,” he added.

Vidyasagar appreciated girls and pointed out that they have marked 100 percent result in commerce in Pakur district which clearly indicates that students of backward districts have zeal to perform better.
