A centralised sewerage and drainage system for Ranchi is soon likely to become a reality as the Central Government on Tuesday gave its consent for the system which will be built under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The Central Government has approved `302 crore for one zone of the ambitious project.

Significantly, around 192 km long sewerage line under Morhabadi, Gonda and Kanke besides a 212 km long drainage will be constructed under the project. Notably, Jharkhand Urban Development Corporation limited will be the nodal agency.

“Government gave its consent for one zone. However Ranchi is divided in three zones for putting a sewerage and drainage system in place,” said Town Planner RMC, Gajanand Ram. Incidentally, another agency Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has also been in negotiation with the Uraban Development Department over construction of sewerage and drainage system in Ranchi.

The agency has inked pact for surveying the city for putting up the ambitious system. As per the agreement signed, the Japanese team will conduct the survey while the RMC will provide a temporary office space to the agency. The agency will submit the report to the municipal body towards the second half of 2014.
