'Enact strong law on cow protection'

PNS

Activists under the banner of the Odisha Surakhya Sena (OSS) gheraoed the Naveen Nivas here on Monday demanding adoption of a strong law for prevention of cow trafficking and cow slaughter in the State.

Headed by OSS president Abhishek Joshi, members of the body protested the inaction of the State Government in accepting the proposed bill on cow protection given by the body in October last year.

However, the Commissionerate Police arrested many members and workers of the outfit, including president Joshi, general secretary Gajendra Behera, vice-president Girija Prasanna Das, law department head Ramakant Panda, secretary Satyabrata Panda and youth wing president Debabrata Mishra.

Notably, the OSS had staged a dharna at the lower PMG here on January 17, 2015 demanding a law for protection of cows. With no measures taken by the Government, the body submitted a draft proposal for a Bill named ‘Odisha Prohibition and Prevention of Cow Slaughter Bill’ in October last year to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik urging him to pass the suggested Bill in the upcoming Winter Session of the Assembly.
