Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati would kick off the campaign for 2022 UP assembly polls during party founder Kanshi Ram’s death anniversary on Saturday.

After a call to party workers to pay homage to the party founder at Kanshi Ram Memorial in the state capital, Mayawati also announced her visit to the memorial on her mentor’s death anniversary.

Party sources revealed that with an estimated one lakh cadre turnout at the memorial, Mayawati is likely to formally address the crowd, marking the first ‘unofficial’ party rally this election season.

Reports from various districts confirmed that thousands of BSP leaders and workers had already left their respective districts on buses to reach Lucknow later in the night or latest by early Saturday morning.

Former chief minister of UP, Mayawati, has already held several meetings with party office-bearers to review poll preparations and ensure maximum turnout in Lucknow when she pays her homage to party founder and her mentor Kanshi Ram on his death anniversary on October 9.

Sources in the party said, it was decided to observe Kanshi Ram’s death anniversary in a big way to mark the party’s formal campaign launch.

“Behenji has asked people from 75 districts to come to Lucknow. We are expecting a crowd of approximately one lakh, if not more, to visit the memorial. This will be the largest gathering of party workers in the state capital in two years, but we will ensure adherence to Covid protocols,” said a party member.

Due to the pandemic, the birth anniversary celebrations were held at the divisional level last year, but this year, Mayawati has decided to organise only one big event in Lucknow.
