Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Scrap this triple talaq” (December 10). The Allahabad High Court has rightly observed that instant divorce in the form of verbal uttering of the word ‘talaq’, thrice, by a married Muslim man to his wife, is disparaging and is bound to take India back to the
medieval period.
Surely, the High Court’s observation will generate mixed reactions from among the Muslim community. While on the one hand, the victim ie Muslim women, will eulogise the observations, the All India Muslim Personal law Board, which considers women to be subservient to men, will definitely be unhappy.
The Supreme Court, which has a number of pending cases related to triple talaq, must not disappoint the vast number of Muslim women, and, instead, give them their due right.
