Sir — This refers to the article, “Reforming higher education” (August 16) by lalit Kumar. It’s not just about India’s poor performance in global rankings of educational institutions. Time and again Indian Inc have complained about the quality of education. I agree with the writer that research is one area which needs special attention.
It is also a fact that despite the Seventh Pay Commission’s recommendations to increase pay for faculty members, they are still not encouraged as it is not lucrative enough. These are issues that the Government needs to pay attention to on an urgent basis.
