Letter to the Editor

Shifting blame

Ganapathi Bhat

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Do not politicise rape” (March 18). Crimes against women have no religion. It is foolhardy to attribute political angles to crimes like rape. Any offence against women is a direct reflection on the efficiency of the respective State Government. The rape of a septuagenarian nun shows how badly the law and order situation has deteriorated under Ms Mamata Banerjee in West Bengal. The spontaneous public ire the Chief Minister has had to face, reflects the prevailing mood of the people.

Every time there is opposition to her, Ms Banerjee appears unnerved. The recent spate of arrests of politicians considered close to her, in the Saradha scam, and her anger against the NDA Government, are proof enough. The Chief Minister should focus on maintaining the law of the land. Her ordering of a CBI inquiry in the nun rape case is welcome.
