Remark misread

M Ratan

Sir — This refers to the report, “Shah booked for revenge remark, BJP cries foul” (April 7).

It is astonishing that by the directive of the Uttar Pradesh Chief Electoral Officer, two FIRs have been filed against BJP’s general secretary Amit Shah for his ‘revenge’ remarks. Instead of personally examining the allegedly offensive statement, the Chief Electoral Officer has clearly relied on the interested anti-BJP party, the Congress’s motivated complaint against Mr Shah.

I have heard Mr Shah’s statement on television channels, urging people to take “revenge” for the “insults” hurled by opponents over the Muzaffarnagar riots, by pressing the right button on the voting machine and endorsing the BJP at the voting booth. Could this democratic, non-violent call for rejecting the insulters through the ballot box, be considered a provocation for revenge by violent means, by any stretch of imaginationIJ The BJP’s Uttar Pradesh in-charge should not be hounded.
