Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has been avoiding pleadings for a Supreme Court-monitored CBI inquiry into the infamous Vyapam scam. More than 45 unnatural and mysterious deaths have occurred in connection with the scam, leading one believe that there is more to it than meets the eye.
Mr Chouhan has been insisting that the order for a CBI probe should come from the Supreme Court or the High Court. Since a Special Investigation Team was formed on directions of the High Court, and deaths are occurring during the SIT inquiries, it is for the Supreme Court to intervene in the matter.
It is indeed unfortunate that the State Government is not taking the initiative for a CBI probe. The Madhya Pradesh Government is losing creditability in the matter. Worse, there have been BJP leaders from the State who have been making insensitive remarks, with one of them even mocking the untimely death of a journalist investigating the scam.
