Operational tactics

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Bold, welcome verdict” (May 6). The Supreme Court’s judgement, confirming death sentence for all four culprits in the infamous Nirbhaya rape case, is welcome. However, the issue should not be allowed to be slowly poisoned by tactics of delayed execution through lengthy procedures of review petition and mercy petition.

In fact, the apex court must do away with the tradition of hearings on review petitions after rejection of mercy petitions. It should also direct the Government to ensure decision on mercy petitions in a time-bound period of, say, three months. The execution should take place within one week of rejection of a mercy petition.
