Numbers speak

KV Seetharamaiah

Sir — This refers to the article, “A big bang structural reform” (September 3) by Sanju Verma. A gross domestic product (GDP) growth at 8.2 per cent towards the end of the first quarter is a sour news for the Opposition, the Congress in particular. Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram lost no time in pointing out that 8.2 per cent growth is not a reality.

It must be recalled that the GDP was 4.7 per cent in 2014 when former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh relinquished his office. History has been created with this record growth.

Congress supporters say that this is the result of sustained efforts of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government about 4.5 years ago. The same opinion would not have emanated if the growth had been far from satisfactory.

The UPA ruled for 10 years from 2004 to 2014. Does it mean that the plans and programmes of the UPA Government did not yield positive results in GDP growth for about 14.5 years (10 years under UPA plus 4.5 years in National Democratic Alliance (NDA))ij

The fact is that several policy measures of the Modi Government, like the Goods and Services Tax as also demonetisation, which have been the objects of scathing attack by Congress-led Opposition, have started bearing fruits.   This is tantalizingly bad for the Congress and its allies whereas it is ache din for the aam admi.
