NPT standards

Aaron Tovish

Sir — This refers to the article, “Nuclear weapons: A deterrent or statusIJ” (November 11) by Gwynne Dyer. There are many countries that have powerful enemies but have still adhered faithfully to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. British Opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn is right to want to aspire to that standard.

With regard to South Africa’s nuclear weapons, it was not Nelson Mandela but the apartheid regime itself that dismantled the nuclear programme in its last days. Finally, America’s Manhattan Project was launched out of fear of a nuclear Nazi German, but that fear was removed long before VE-Day.
