Honest intent lacking

Anil Gupta

Sir — This refers to the article, “Will the rupee sink UPA’s fortunes” (August 23) by Kalyani Shankar. The real issue is not lack of proper legislation but lack of sincerity in solving the woes of the people. As has been noticed in the past and written about extensively, our leaders today are more intent on pushing their self-interest rather than ensuring the proper implementation of schemes, or formulating policies to benefit the people.

Given this attitude, it is not surprising that there have been numerous scams in the last five years. The 2G Spectrum, Commonwealth Games, coal block allocation scams and sundry other scandals are a testimony to the scale of corruption that exists and the shocking lack of propriety among those who are meant to uphold the rule of law.

Were it not for an alert media which exposed these scandals, the people would have been none the wiser. It is a sad state of affairs that as a people we seem to have become inured to such corruption and misgovernance. We need to shed our ‘chalta hai’ attitude.
