Sir — Chief Justice of India JS Kehar’s opinion about making political parties accountable for poll promises is welcome. Since political parties make gimmick assurances for votes, their election manifestoes must be given a legal status. The Election Commission of India must be empowered with the power to de-recognise parties who go against the aspects as mentioned in their manifestoes. Also, there must be a total ban on freebies promised at public expense in poll manifestoes.
