Defending freedom

Uttam K Bhowmik

Sir — This refers to the article, “Barking up the wrong tree helps no cause” (March 14) by Karishma Sundara. India’s weakness in playing to the rule of law and justice and a lack of honest desire are responsible for heinous crimes like rape. To the rest of the world, India is identified as a place where women’s safety, dignity and rights are violated. India hides facts by covering it with nationalistic sentiment.

Banning a film or a book or any creative form of expression cannot be the solution. Pablo Picasso’s Guernica was about destruction, violence, deformity and inhumanity. But it also had a seed of positivity, peace, humanity. India’s Daughter would surely inspire the desire for a world where women live in safety. Our politicians and other democratic columns must play an active role where the social fabric, values, rule of law, individualistic freedom can be protected. They must stop cribbing over irrelevant issues.
