Debate over child labour cannot be one-sided

TT Sakaria

This refers to the article, “When rights and laws matter less” (July 28) by Kailash Satyarthi. The author has criticised the Bolivian Government for its decision to allow child labour and argued that poverty should not be a reason to violate international norms and conventions in this regard.

But what about those children who are deplorably poor in studies or cannot afford to attend schoolsIJ How can we ignore the fact that a large number of students, who fail to shine in academic studies, are endowed with praiseworthy talent in technical mattersIJ It has been observed that minor children, engaged in mechanical work, very often become adept in the field and lead a successful life.

laws are always made by those who are in authority. laws cannot be equally practical, just, acceptable and adaptable for all people in the world. They are subject to change from country to country and situation to situation.
